Maedaya Sake & Grill Review – Richmond – Australia

Maedaya Sake & Grill is a Japanese restaurant on Bridge Road in Richmond that outshines its neighbors by boasting an impressive and extensive food and drink menu.  They also grill fresh and adventurous food upon request and are located in an exciting atmosphere.  This is an unpretentious venue that produces pretentious worthy food.  What more could I ask for.

Upon arrival we were promptly seated and handed what I presumed to be an Ipad that displayed the menu.  The extensive Sake menu on offer instantly took me aback.  I am, nor could I ever pretend to be an expert on the stuff, but on occasion I do enjoy a glass, and this list was impressive.  The rest of the menu was easily displayed on various pages of the Ipad and we were also expected to order directly from there.  There was no interaction needed for ordering, we just selected our choices, hit the order tab, and within minutes delicious Japanese food arrived almost inexplicably at our table…Brilliant.

The food came quickly and before we knew it we were into our first dish.  One of the first things to arrive was their kimchi.  I know kimchi is traditionally Korean, but Maedaya did it right, fermented beautifully with just the right amount of kick.  I absolutely love the stuff.  It was followed by deep fried crab claws, dragon rolls, chicken gyozas, fried cubed tofu and seared scallops.  The crab claws were crispy and hot, scallops tender and delicious, sushi was fresh and the gyozas were just alright.  Everything else was pleasing; even the tofu that my wife ordered without me knowing.

I am not one to traditionally order tofu as I think it doesn’t really taste like anything, but these fried salted cubes were not bad at all.  That’s says a lot coming from me, who is a self-proclaimed meat-man.  They were crispy, salty and really quite delicious.

By the end of the meal we had ordered too much – probably due to the interactive menu that was on our table throughout – so we didn’t get any dessert.  The meal was satisfying and it’s nice to know that there is a high quality Japanese restaurant that is reasonably priced within walking distance from where we live.
