Alpha Ouzeri Review – Fitzroy, Melbourne – Australia
My colleagues and I recently went to Alpha Ouzeri on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. It was a boy’s night out so we decided upon a Greek restaurant that had a fairly good reputation to start. Alpha Ouzeri is located in a trendy part of town, they offer a BYO wine option and there is lots of food – so we thought it would be a perfect start to a night promised to be full of overindulgence, N2 gelato and good scotch. This is my type of night.
The group of us (five to be exact) landed in Fitzroy around 7:00pm for the start of the evening and meal. We decided to get the share platter with some appetisers, a seafood plate, a meat plate, a dessert plate, Greek coffee and ouzo to finish.
Our starters came promptly and there was a decent selection. They offered a trio of dips (Taramosalada, skordalia, tzatziki), fresh cut bread, chorizo and chilies, grilled octopus and dolmades. The starters were plentiful and delicious with lots of variety to choose from.
We did the best we could on the first round and prepped for round two – seafood. This course consisted of grilled prawns, grilled swordfish and calamari. The calamari didn’t look the greatest, but was tender and well seasoned. The prawns were slightly overdone, but the fish was firm and beautifully prepared.
By this point in the meal I was getting quite full and we still had another course to go. The last main course was the meat platter. They brought out an intimidating tray of beef, lamb cutlets and grilled chicken. The meat was so tender that it melted in my mouth and fell off the bone. The lamb was rare, the beef was fatty and juicy, and the chicken grilled just nicely. Everybody was overfull and we couldn’t finish.
Lastly they brought out a tray of homemade Greek desserts followed by coffees and a complimentary shot of ouzo for the table. This was a great way to finish a filling and satisfying meal. We proceeded into the night for more food and drink and capped the evening off at a local Scotch bar in downtown Melbourne. All in all it was a really great night with some fine food and finer company.
