The Grand Hotel Review – Richmond – Australia

Last night we decided to celebrate because my wife finished her exams for law school, so we popped a bottle of Australian Bubbly – Seppelt NV from Victoria and got ready for dinner.  I already had a bottle of home brew and a few glasses of wine by the time we got to the restaurant, so I was feeling mighty fine and I was certain that the food was going to be good.

The Grand in Richmond offers an Italian meal on Monday nights that includes Pane di casa with marinated olives to start, followed by a choice of 3 mains and a glass of Italian wine, all for $27.50.  The Grand has been a hatted restaurant for 11 years, so it really is a good deal.  The only stipulation is that you have to eat on the bar side, and not the dining room, but the food comes from the same kitchen.  I was game.

Initially I was a little apprehensive to sit on the bar side, but it worked out fine.  It was more casual than the dining room and the wait staff were friendly and attentive.  When we were ready we went to the bar to order.

I went for a glass of Chianti and the Insalata di coniglio – Rabbit salad.  It was not my usual pick for dinner as I don’t usually choose salad, but according to our server it was the most flavourful choice on the menu.  He didn’t lie.  It was a red endive based salad with big chunks of rabbit and plenty of Parmesan cheese laced throughout.  It was heavenly.  The rabbit was moist with beautiful white flesh, the sauce was a great compliment to the dish and it was mighty filling.  I was happy.

We decided to split a molten cake for dessert and it was done right – hot with ice-cream and a warm runny middle that oozed from the cake as we pierced the outer layer with our forks.  The contrast of temperature with the hot cake and cold ice-cream really worked well and it was a strong finish to an authentic Italian meal.

Every Monday they put out a new menu featuring a different region in Italy, so it’s a good way to eat well and try the different regions throughout.  They also offer a duck and pinot night on Wednesdays that is on my list.
