City Wine Shop Review – Melbourne, Australia
For my wife’s birthday this year I booked us a night at Hotel Windsor in Melbourne, Australia. This is a historic location that is over 100 years old and has hosted such guests as the Duke of Windsor and Mohammad Ali. We didn’t end up eating there, but after an early dinner, a bottle of Moet Champagne, we decided to go out for some late night bites.
Just around the corner from our historic hotel was a great little wine bar located in the theatre district of Melbourne’s CBD. This was the City Wine Shop. This little bar offered exactly what we were looking for. It boasted an impressive wine list with lots to choose from by the glass and lots of great little bites to sink your teeth into. We each got a glass of wine (08 Delta Hatter Hill Pinot Noir and a 13 Wilson Watervale Riesling) and ordered a few tapas to get us through the night.
I decided on one oyster natural, a serving of polenta chips with and a serving of impressive French cheese from Bourgogne (Delice de Bourgogne) presented with quince paste, apple slices and walnuts.
The polenta chips were hot, crisp and salty… Delicious deep fried goodness. The cheese was ripe, soft and luscious, that presented a truly full mouth feel, and the oyster was fresh and exactly what I was looking for.
This was a perfect end to a great evening. We had dined at a Japanese joint earlier in the evening and left a little disappointed, so this was a nice treat to round out the night.
If you’re into wine and respectable food, try this place out.
